The Republic of Niger is a landlocked country located in Western Africa. Niger is known for being one of the hottest counties in the world and has earned the nickname “the frying pan of the world.” The official language is French. The top industry in Niger is mining, specifically uranium. Agriculture and services also contribute to Niger's economy. Niger is considered a developing nation.

Employment contracts in Niger are generally written in the local language. Employment contracts can be for a fixed or indefinite term. Fixed-term contracts have a maximum duration of two years and can only be renewed once. Additionally, there are employment contracts for seasonal and temporary work, which can be renewed an unlimited number of times if agreed upon by both parties.

Normal working hours in Niger vary by industry. Overtime is paid at 110% of the basic rate for hours between 42 to 48 and then 135% after 48 hours. The overtime rises to 150% if the work occurs on a Sunday or public holiday and 200% for evening work.

Employees receive five days of fully paid sick leave per year in Niger.

Female employees receive 14 weeks of fully paid maternity leave in Niger. Six weeks must be taken prior to the child’s birth, which can be increased by three weeks for medical reasons. Maternity leave is funded by both the employer and social security. Male employees receive one day of paid paternity leave.

Employers in Niger are not required to provide bonuses to their employees. Niger has a minimum wage.

Employees in Niger receive 22 days of paid vacation leave each year.

Employers in Niger may offer private health insurance.

An employment contract in Niger terminates at the end of the contract period (if for a fixed period) or may be terminated by either party. Employers in Niger generally must have a valid reason for terminating an employee. The termination must be in writing and the employee is entitled to notice. Employees in Niger are entitled to severance pay if they have at least one year of service, unless dismissed for misconduct.
